Cyrtosperma spp. (swamp taro) is also eaten in parts of Micronesia and Melanesia, and is cultivated in swamps as its English name suggests. In addition, some species of Schismatoglottis spp. are also eaten because they are not very bitter, but they are not important. Xanthosoma spp. (yautia), native to Central and South America, is more drought-resistant than taro, and there is a species, X. sagittifolia Schott, which is now widely cultivated in tropical regions, and is a more important tropical potato crop than taro, but genealogically speaking, it is different from the taro associated with the root-crop farming culture originating in Southeast Asia, and should be distinguished from taro. …
