A theoretical spokesman for the popular movement during the French Revolution and an egalitarian social reformer. Born into a notary's family in central France, he studied at a seminary and became an assistant priest in a mountain village in the Auvergne region, but was expelled from there after fighting superstition, and in 1784 became a priest in a small village called Mauchamp, south of Paris. Seeing the plight of poor peasants, he came to embrace egalitarian reform ideas, and when, in the spring of 1792 during the Revolution, an uprising occurred in nearby Étampes demanding control of grain prices, he sent a petition to the National Assembly calling for the implementation of economic control based on the primacy of the right to live, the correction of wealth inequality, and restrictions on land ownership, in order to justify the demands of the poor peasants and the general public. This petition had a great influence on Robespierre, who read it.

フランス革命期の民衆運動の理論的代弁者で平等主義的な社会改革論者。中部フランスの公証人の家に生まれ，神学校に学び，オーベルニュ地方の山村の助任司祭になったが，迷信を排撃したことが契機になってそこを追われ，1784年にパリ南方のモーシャンという小さな村の司祭に就任した。貧しい農民の窮状を見て平等主義的改革思想を抱くにいたった彼は，革命中の1792年春，近くのエタンプで穀物価格の統制を要求する一揆が発生すると，貧農や民衆の要求を正当化するために，生存権の優位に基づく経済統制の実施，富の不平等の是正，土地所有権の制限を主張した請願書を議会に送り，これを読んだロベスピエールに大きな影響を与えた。
