1922‐61 Haitian author. Born into a distinguished family whose ancestor was Dessalines, a leader of the Haitian Revolution. While studying in France, he absorbed Négritude literature from Césaire and Senghor, existentialism from Sartre, critical realism from Flaubert and Zola, and socialist realism from Gorky and Ehrenburg, and developed his own unique style known as "phenomenal realism."
