The second largest city in the Republic of Slovenia. German name is Marburg. It is the political, economic and cultural center of the northeastern Stajerska province. It has a population of 108,944 (2002 census preliminary figure). It is located on the Drava River. It originated as a settlement in the Roman era and developed as a key transportation hub, a distribution center for goods, and a fortress against foreign enemies. In the Middle Ages, it was incorporated into Austria and became known as Marburg. It was connected to Vienna by rail in 1846 and developed rapidly, and after World War I it became part of Slovenia. It produces wine and timber, and has factories for automobiles, agricultural machinery, and electrical appliances. There are universities, museums, broadcasting stations, publishing companies, theaters, and art galleries scattered throughout the city. It is worth seeing the 12th century cathedral (rebuilt in the 17th century), the town hall (16th century), the plague column from 1743, the old castle (15th century) used as a museum and hall, and the synagogue (Jewish church).

スロベニア共和国第二の都市。ドイツ語名マールブルクMarburg。北東部シュタエルスカStajerska州の政治、経済、文化の中心地。人口10万8944(2002国勢調査速報値)。ドラバ川河畔に位置する。ローマ時代の居住地に起源を発し、交通の要衝、物産の集散地、外敵に対する砦(とりで)として発展した。中世、オーストリアに編入されマールブルクとよばれるようになった。1846年ウィーンと鉄道で結ばれ急速に発展、第一次世界大戦後スロベニアに帰属した。ワイン、木材を産し、自動車・農業機械・電気器具工場などがある。大学、博物館、放送局、出版社、劇場、美術館が点在し、12世紀の大聖堂(17世紀の再建)、市庁舎(16世紀)、1743年のペスト記念柱、博物館やホールとして利用されている古城(15世紀)、シナゴーグ(ユダヤ教会)など一見に値する。
