The causative agent of a group of plant diseases called yellow dwarf disease, such as rice yellow dwarf disease, potato witches' broom disease, Japanese honeybee witches' broom disease, mulberry dwarf disease, and paulownia witches' broom disease, is a prokaryotic microorganism lacking a cell wall, which is morphologically very similar to mycoplasma, but because it is extremely difficult to isolate and culture, its classification has not yet been determined, and it is currently called a mycoplasmalike organism. In vegetatively propagated crops, it spreads from the mother plant, but in the field, it is mainly transmitted by leafhoppers and stink bugs.
