Russian explorer, folklorist and writer. Born in St. Petersburg, he spent most of his life on expeditions in the Far East. He explored South Primorsky Krai (now Primorsky Krai) from 1902 to 1903, the Sikhote-Alin Mountains from 1906 to 1910, the Kamchatka Peninsula in 1918, and the Commander Islands in 1923, leaving behind valuable documents on the manners, customs and nature of the indigenous people of the Far East, such as the Nanai and Udegai peoples. His books, "A Record of an Expedition in the Ussuri Territory" (1921), "Dersu Uzala" (1923), and "In the Mountains of Sikhote-Alin" (1937), written for the general reader, are excellent travelogues that lyrically sing of the resilience of people living in the great outdoors. "Dersu Uzala" is also known for being made into a film (1975) by director Akira Kurosawa.
