Saint-Savin

A town in the Bienne department in the Poitou region in southwestern France. Population 1,283 (1969). The bridge over the Gartempe River dates back to the 13th century. Of the former monastery, which is said to have been founded by Charlemagne, the church built in the 11th century (with the spire of the entrance from the 15th century) remains. The nave is supported on both sides by high side aisles, a structure unique to this region. The murals cover the entire area from the crypt to the bell tower/entrance and the nave ceiling, making it a masterpiece of surviving Romanesque painting. In particular, the semi-cylindrical vault of the nave ceiling (42m long) depicts scenes from Genesis and Exodus in bold forms, using reddish brown, ochre, green and white on a light background.

フランス南西部ポアトゥー地方，ビエンヌ県の町。人口1283(1969)。ガルタンプGartempe川にかかる橋は13世紀にさかのぼる。シャルルマーニュ創建の伝承もある旧修道院のうち，11世紀建立の教会堂(玄関の尖塔は15世紀)が残る。身廊の両脇を高い側廊が支える，当地方特有の構造である。壁画が地下聖堂(クリプタ)から鐘塔兼玄関，身廊天井を覆い尽くし，現存ロマネスク絵画の傑作とされる。とくに身廊天井の半円筒ボールト(長さ42m)には，明るい地の上に赤褐色，黄土色，緑，白を使い大胆な形態描写で，《創世記》《出エジプト記》の場面が展開される。
