Artemisia

Japanese: アルテミシア（英語表記）Artemisia

Daughter of Lygdamis, ruler of Halicarnassus in Caria, Asia Minor. She lived in the 6th to 5th century BC, but her birth and death years are unknown. After her husband's death, despite the fact that she had an adult son, she inherited dictatorial powers herself, and took control of the neighboring islands of Kos, Nisyros, and Calymnos. As a tyrant subject to Persian suzerainty, she led five warships in Xerxes I (the Great)'s Greek expedition (480 BC), and despite being a woman, she fought bravely in the naval Battle of Salamis, and gave the Great King sound advice when he retreated.

小アジアのカリア地方ハリカルナッソスの支配者リュグダミスの娘。前6～前5世紀の人だが生没年は不詳。夫の死後，成人に達した息子があったにもかかわらず，自ら独裁権を継承して，コス，ニシュロス，カリュムノスなど近隣の島々をも支配した。ペルシア宗主権に服する僭主としてクセルクセス1世(大王)のギリシア遠征(前480)に軍船5隻を率いて従軍し，サラミスの海戦では女性ながら大奮戦し，大王の退却に際しては的確な助言を与えた。
