A short story by Russian author N. Gogol. Published in 1842. It is the most important work in the series of his works known as the "Petersburg Stories." Akaky Akakievich, a poor minor official, has finally bought a new overcoat. However, he is invited to a banquet as a joke and forced to drink alcohol. On his way home, he is attacked by robbers and his overcoat is stolen. The police ignore him, and he asks an "important person" for help, but they turn him away. Dejected, he falls ill and dies alone. After his death, a ghost appears, tearing the overcoat away from the official. The ghost finally attacks the "important person's" carriage and disappears. Gogol appeals to the reader that even "small people" are "human" through "laughter through tears," and made a great impression on the reading public at the time, having a great influence on the development of Russian literature thereafter.
