The oxides of rhenium with the oxidation states IV, V, VI, and VII are known. The oxides of rhenium with the oxidation states I, II, and III have not been obtained as anhydrous compounds. [Rhenium(IV) oxide] Chemical formula: ReO2 . It is obtained by heating a mixture of rhenium and rhenium(VII) oxide in a quartz tube for a long time at over 600°C. It is a dark brown powder. Specific gravity: 11.4 (25°C). When heated to 1000°C in a high vacuum, it becomes rhenium and rhenium(VII) oxide. It is reduced to rhenium by hydrogen at 800°C.
