Killer whale (orchid)

Japanese: シャチ(鯱) - シャチ（英語表記）killer whale

A mammal of the family Delphinidae in the suborder Odontoceti (Odontoceti). Also called the Sakamata. Also called the orca after its scientific name. A large dolphin with a high dorsal fin found in oceans around the world. Its back is black-brown and its underside is white. It has a conspicuous oval white spot above its eye and a marking on its lower back. There is a saddle-shaped light-colored spot behind its dorsal fin. Its head is pointed and transitions into a short beak. It has 10 to 13 teeth on each side, with a diameter of 3 to 4 cm. Mature males can reach a body length of 9.5 m and weigh over 8 tons. Its dorsal fin can reach a height of 1.8 m, making it easily visible from afar.

ハクジラ亜目マイルカ科の哺乳類（イラスト）。サカマタともいう。また学名からオルカとも呼ばれる。世界中の海に分布する高い背びれをもつ大型イルカ。背面は黒褐色で腹面は白色。目の上の楕円形の白斑と腰部の斑紋が目だつ。背びれの後ろには鞍状の淡色斑がある。頭部はとがり，短いくちばしに移行する。歯は直径3～4cmで，上下左右に各10～13本。成熟した雄は体長9.5m，体重8t以上。背びれの高さは1.8mに達し，遠方からでもよく見える。
