Cyphella

Cyphella

...The umbilicus is a hard, umbilicus-like bundle of hyphae that has the same origin as the rhizoid and is unique to the family Cercospora. The cyphellae and pseudocyphellae are tiny holes or cracks that appear on the surface of the lichen, and are circular or linear. They are thought to play a role in gas exchange. The cephalodia are pouch-like organs that contain cyanobacteria and occur in lichens that have a symbiotic relationship with green algae. They occur in the genera Cercospora, Cercospora, and Cercospora.
