The cyphellae and pseudocyphellae are tiny holes or cracks that appear on the surface of the lichen, and are circular or linear. They are thought to play a role in gas exchange. The cephalodia are pouch-like organs that contain cyanobacteria and occur in lichens that have a symbiotic relationship with green algae.
