Doggett's Coat and Badge race

...Modern races began as rowing contests held by professional rowers employed by aristocrats on the River Thames in England in the 16th and 17th centuries, and in 1716, comedian Thomas Doggett (?-1721) is known to have founded a race between London Bridge and Chelsea to commemorate the accession of King George I. The prize (price) was an orange coat with a silver coat of arms (badge), and this is still held today as the Doggett's Coat and Badge race, with single sculls. However, the oldest known Thames River regatta dates back to 1768 or 1775.
