Sangallo, Francesco da
Born: 1494. Florence
[Died] 1576. Florentine Italian sculptor. Son of architect Giuliano da Sangallo. Commonly known as Il Margotta. In 1504 he went to Rome, where he met Michelangelo and Andrea Sansovino, and was deeply influenced by them. He trained under Sansovino until 1529. In 1533, he participated in the decoration of the Basilica of Santa Casa (the Holy House) in Loreto together with Tribolo and Raffaello da Montelupo. From 1540 to 1546, he worked as a decorative sculptor on the construction of St. Peter's Basilica in Rome. He completed the tombs of Bishop Marzi-Medici in the Basilica of Sant'Annunziata in Florence (1546), Piero di Lorenzo de' Medici in Monte Cassino (1547), Leonardo Bonafede in Florence (1550), and Paolo Giovio in the Basilica of San Lorenzo in Florence (1550).

[Died] 1534. Florentine Italian architect. Also known as Antonio da Sangallo il Vecchio. A member of the Sangallo family, he was the younger brother of Giuliano (1445-1516) and the uncle of Antonio (Picconi). His most famous work is the Basilica of San Biagio in Montepulciano (18-29), which shows the influence of D. Bramante's plan for St. Peter's Basilica. He also designed palazzos for the Cherubini, Contucci, and Talusi families in the same area. He is also known for the fortress of Civita Castellana (after 1495), which he built for Cesare Borgia.

Died in 1516. Florentine Italian architect. He opened up new horizons in the development of Renaissance architecture by further developing the architectural ideas of Brunelleschi and Alberti. His masterpiece, Santa Maria delle Carceri (1485-91, Prato), was one of the first examples of a Greek cross-shaped centralized plan in Italian Renaissance architecture. His Villa Reale (c. 83-85, Poggio a Caiano), built for Lorenzo the Magnificent, became a model for subsequent Renaissance villa architecture.

[Died] 1546. Terni. Italian architect. Also called Antonio da Sangallo il Giovane. A member of the Sangallo family, and nephew of Giuliano da Sangallo and Antonio da Sangallo. A pupil of Donato Bramante, he worked mainly in Rome. He succeeded Raffaello Sanzio as superintendent of the construction of St. Peter's Basilica (although the work made little progress in reality). His most famous work is the Palazzo Farnese in Rome.

イタリアの建築家。ブルネレスキやアルベルティの建築構想をさらに発展させることによってルネサンス建築の展開に新生面を開いた。彼の代表作サンタ・マリア・デレ・カルチェリ聖堂 (1485~91,プラト) は,イタリア・ルネサンス建築におけるギリシア十字形集中式平面の最初の作例の一つ。またロレンツォ・イル・マニフィコのために建てたビラ・レアーレ (83~85頃,ポッジオ・ア・カイアーノ) は,ルネサンスのその後のビラ建築の範となった。
