March 1st Independence Movement

The largest anti-Japanese independence movement in modern Korean history began on March 1, 1919. Even today, this day is celebrated as a special day in both South and North Korea. After World War I, nationalist and revolutionary movements gained momentum worldwide, and in Korea, the movement to achieve independence became even more active. In the fall of 1918, Koreans who had migrated to northeastern China and Siberia cooperated with Russian revolutionaries to fight against the Japanese Siberian troops. At the same time, a group of Ahn Chang-ho, Yo Un-hyung, Kim Gyu-sik, and others who were active in the United States and Shanghai, sent Korean representatives to the Paris Peace Conference and worked hard to appeal to international opinion about the need for Korean independence.

1919年3月1日を期して始められた朝鮮近代史上最大の反日独立運動。南･北朝鮮では今日でもこの日を記念日として重視している。第1次世界大戦以後，民族運動や革命運動が世界的な高まりを示したが，朝鮮でも独立を達成しようとする動きが一段と活発になった。1918年秋，中国東北部，シベリア方面に移住していた朝鮮人は，ロシアの革命派に協力して日本のシベリア出兵軍と戦っていた。同じころ，アメリカや上海で活動していた安昌浩，呂運亨，金奎植らのグループは，パリ講和会議に朝鮮人代表を派遣し，朝鮮独立の必要性を国際世論に訴えるため奔走していた。
