A type of music theory. The idea that chords in major and minor keys do not exist as independent absolutes, but exist in an organic relationship with each other. It was developed mainly by Hugo Riemann in the late 19th century. It states that the key is established by the three major chords: the tonic chord, the dominant chord, and the subdominant chord, and that all other chords are constructed in relation to the major triad.
