A marine animal belonging to the Echinodermata phylum, Echinoidea class, Diadema family. A dangerous sea urchin with thin, sharp spines that are over 20 cm long. The spines are hollow and covered with tiny barbs on the surface, so they easily pierce the skin and break, making them difficult to remove. When stung, the area around the spine swells purple and causes a throbbing pain. The entire shell is blackish purple, and a shiny orange anus bulges out from the center of the top of the shell. Many have bright blue spots on the top of the shell and five white spots on each side. Some have striped spines, and some are completely white. They have a habit of vigorously swinging their spines when they sense shadows. They feed mainly on attached organisms and animal matter. This species is widely distributed in the coral reef areas of the Indian Ocean and the Western Pacific Ocean, and in the waters off Japan, they are commonly found in slightly deep rocky shores south of the Boso Peninsula. This species is distinguished from the mixed species D. savignyi by the lack of orange anus and by the presence of continuous blue lines on the top and sides of the shell. The gonads of both species are edible.
