A bird of the Psittacidae family (illustration). Also called the kea. A large parrot with a total length of 50 cm and a greenish-brown color, it has a long, sharp upper beak. It is found only on the South Island of New Zealand, and lives in flocks on rocky areas with low shrubs in the alpine zone. It spends most of its time on the ground, eating nectar, berries, buds, bulbs, and insects. During the breeding season, it lays four eggs per clutch in holes or crevices in rocks. The kea is also famous as the only carnivorous parrot. It eats offal discarded near sheep slaughterhouses, but sometimes it will land on the back of a live sheep and peck at it with its sharp beak to eat the sheep's fat.
