Keisuke Serizawa

Dye artist. Born in Shizuoka City. Graduated from the Tokyo Higher Technical School, Department of Design. Initially, he aspired to be a designer, but after reading Yanagi Muneyoshi's book "The Way of Crafts," he became involved in the folk art movement, and in 1928 (Showa 3), inspired by Okinawa's bingata (dyeing) that he saw at the Tairei Memorial National Promotion Exposition, he entered the world of dyeing. He is known for his stencil dyeing of rural landscapes and everyday items based on bingata, as well as decorative characters such as "Iroha" and "Spring, Summer, Autumn, and Winter." In addition to dyeing, he is also known as a collector of prints, bookbinding, furniture design, and folk art. In 1956 (Showa 31), he was recognized as a holder of an Important Intangible Cultural Property for his stencil dyeing technique, which he invented. Many of his works are collected by the Serizawa Hall of the Ohara Museum of Art in Kurashiki City (opened in 1963) and the Shizuoka City Serizawa Keisuke Museum of Art.
