Japanese: 八雲[村] - やくも
Yakumo [Village] - Yakumo
A village in Yatsuka County, eastern Shimane Prefecture. Population 6,694 (1995). Bordering the south of Matsue City, the Iu River flows north through the center of the town, where the Kuwanami River, Higashiiwasaka River, and other rivers join. Kumano Taisha Shrine, located upstream of the Iu River, is an ancient shrine that appears in the Izumo no Kuni Fudoki and was highly praised alongside Izumo Taisha Shrine. During the Sengoku period, the area was an important route to Gassan Castle (Hirose Town), the residence of the Amago clan, and Kumano Castle, located south of Kumano Taisha Shrine, was captured by the Mori clan's invasion. During the Edo period, with the encouragement of the Matsue domain, tea cultivation in the Kumano area and Japanese paper manufacturing in the Bessho area of Higashiiwasaka were thriving. Handmade Japanese paper is still produced in Bessho today, and is known as Izumo folk paper.
