Reform Opera - Kaikaku Opera

...He himself wrote eight opera comiques between 1958 and 1964. Through this process, he infused the French spirit into Italian opera, and with the cooperation of librettist R. Calzabigi, he created the so-called "reform opera" that rebalanced music and drama. His aim, he said, was to eliminate unnecessary musical ornamentation and the priority of singers' techniques, to use music "in accordance with its original purpose of giving expression to poetry and strengthening dramatic situations," and to make "simplicity, truth, and naturalness" his greatest guide.
