〘noun〙① A pole used to protect oneself in case of emergency. ② A pole used to hold down a closed door from the inside. Shinbari-bou. *Jinjyobon, Teisou Fujin Hakkenshi (c. 1834-48), volume 3, "The two servants who shook off the bodyguards appeared, swaying them." ③ A servant employed for guarding. In particular, a martial artist kept by gamblers for the purpose of vigilance. Also, a guard stationed in stores to guard against violent customers. *Zappai, Chikujo Hyōman Ku-a (1746-48), "In this world, bodyguards depend on their curves." *Shirei-Sanshō (1946-48), by Haniya Yukio, "I'm working as a bodyguard at a movie theater."
