A dictionary for defining concepts used in expert systems and the Semantic Web. It is written in an ontology description language. When developing and using systems that use symbolic knowledge representation, such as expert systems and the Semantic Web, the goal is to form a certain agreement between developers and users regarding the concepts used in the system and the names that represent them, to eliminate discrepancies and to increase reuse and interoperability. OWL is a well-known ontology description language. OWL was developed to precisely define the vocabulary (a collection of names) in the Semantic Web, and was adopted as a standard recommendation by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) in 2004. In OWL, the concept represented by a name is called a class, and it is possible to describe superclasses, subclasses, equivalent classes, exclusive classes, logical operations between classes, properties that specify the attributes of a class, and constraints on properties. Furthermore, ontologies can be classified into higher-level ontologies consisting of highly abstract concepts related to time, space, matter, objects, processes, etc.; task ontologies that describe concepts for problem-solving tasks such as diagnosis, design, and planning; and domain ontologies that describe concepts related to specific subject areas.

エキスパートシステムやセマンティックウェブなどで使用される概念を定義するための辞書。オントロジー記述言語によって記述される。エキスパートシステムやセマンティックウェブなどのように記号的な知識表現を用いたシステムを開発し利用するとき，システムで用いられる概念とそれを表す名前に関して，開発者とユーザーの間で一定の合意を形成し齟齬をなくすとともに，再利用や相互運用性を高めることを目的としている。オントロジー記述言語としては，OWLなどが知られている。OWLはセマンティックウェブにおける語彙（名前の集まり）を厳密に定義するために開発され，2004年に WWWコンソーシアム W3Cによる標準勧告に採用された。OWLでは，名前が表す概念はクラスと呼ばれ，与えられたクラスの上位クラス，下位クラス，同等のクラス，排他的なクラス，クラス間の論理演算，クラスの属性を規定するプロパティ，プロパティへの制約などが記述できる。また，オントロジーは，時間，空間，物質，物体，プロセスなどにかかわる抽象性が高い概念から構成される上位オントロジー，診断，設計，計画立案などの問題解決タスク概念を記述したタスクオントロジー，個別の対象領域に関わる概念を記述したドメインオントロジーに分類される。
