Also called glia (cells). Connective tissue found only in the central nervous system. It differs greatly from other connective tissues in that its developmental origin is the ectoderm. It serves to support and nourish nerve cells (neurons). It consists of glial cells and glial fibers, and glial cells are divided into astrocytes, oligodendrocytes, and microglia. Glial fibers are closely related to astrocytes, and some are located within the cell body.
