Neuroglia - Shinkeikou (English spelling)

Japanese: 神経膠 - しんけいこう（英語表記）neuroglia

Also called glia (cells). Connective tissue found only in the central nervous system. It differs greatly from other connective tissues in that its developmental origin is the ectoderm. It serves to support and nourish nerve cells (neurons). It consists of glial cells and glial fibers, and glial cells are divided into astrocytes, oligodendrocytes, and microglia. Glial fibers are closely related to astrocytes, and some are located within the cell body.

グリア (細胞) ともいう。中枢神経系だけにある結合組織。発生の起源が外胚葉であることが，他の結合組織と大きく異なる。神経細胞 (ニューロン) の支持および栄養補給の働きをする。膠細胞と膠線維とから成り，膠細胞は星状膠細胞，稀突起膠細胞，小膠細胞の区別がある。膠線維は星状膠細胞と密接な関係を有し，一部は細胞体の中にある。
