A left bank tributary of the Elbe River in eastern Germany. It originates in the Fichtelgebirge (900m above sea level) in Bavaria, flows north and empties into the Elbe River about 30km upstream from Magdeburg. Its total length is 427km. Its tributaries include the Ilm, Unstrut and Elster. In the mountainous area in the middle reaches, there are two dams and a dammed lake, which generate hydroelectric power. The area around Halle is rich in lignite deposits and also produces potash salt, and there are major industrial cities such as Halle, Leipzig and Gera.
