An abbey is a large monastery, a priory is a small priory, a convent is the residence of mendicant friars or nuns of a modern religious order, and a domus religiosa is the residence of members of a modern overseas mission or active religious order. Christian monasteries were traditionally thought to have been founded in Thebes, Egypt, by the hermits Paul and Anthony in the latter half of the 3rd century, but the discovery of the Dead Sea Scrolls in 1947 confirmed the existence of Jewish monasteries at Qumran and Therapeutae, and the genealogical relationship between these monasteries and the small group of apostles in Jerusalem after Jesus' resurrection was also questioned, and the origin of monasteries has been discussed going back that far. *Some of the terminology that mentions "abbey" is listed below.
