Saar River (English spelling)

Japanese: ザール[川]（英語表記）Saar

A right bank tributary of the Moselle that flows along the border between Germany and France. It originates in the northeastern Vosges Mountains in northeastern France, flows north through eastern Lorraine and enters Germany. From there it flows northwest parallel to the border and joins the Moselle at Konz, upstream of Trier. Its total length is 346 km. The river basin is rich in coal, and played an important role as a transport route for coal and goods during the industrialization of the Saar region in the mid-18th century. The upper reaches are connected to iron ore-producing areas of France by the Marne-Rhine Canal and the Saar Coal Canal.

ドイツとフランスの国境地帯を流れるモーゼル川の右岸支流。フランス北東部のボージュ山地北東部に源を発し，ロレーヌ地方東部を北流してドイツ領内にはいる。ここから国境に並行して北西流し，トリール上流のコンツでモーゼル川に合流する。全長346km。流域は豊富な石炭産地で，18世紀中ごろのザール地方の工業化の際には，石炭，物資の輸送路として重要な役割を果たした。上流部はマルヌ･ライン運河，ザール石炭運河によってフランスの鉄鉱産地などと結ばれている。
