A right bank tributary of the Moselle that flows along the border between Germany and France. It originates in the northeastern Vosges Mountains in northeastern France, flows north through eastern Lorraine and enters Germany. From there it flows northwest parallel to the border and joins the Moselle at Konz, upstream of Trier. Its total length is 346 km. The river basin is rich in coal, and played an important role as a transport route for coal and goods during the industrialization of the Saar region in the mid-18th century. The upper reaches are connected to iron ore-producing areas of France by the Marne-Rhine Canal and the Saar Coal Canal. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
