...Infestations cause severe irritation, and the chickens may stop growing and laying eggs, and the chicks may die. The Chinese mouse flea, Tunga caecigena , takes this parasitism a step further, with the female simply burrowing into the host's ear with her tail peeking out, and from a body length of about 1 mm, she grows to the size of a pea and continues to suck blood and lay eggs until she dies. Other fleas that burrow into the host's tissue include the long-legged flea, Neotunga euloidea , which infests pangolins in Zimbabwe, and the long-legged flea, Vermipsylla alacuri , which infests sheep and horses in the Tianshan and Mongolia.
