A Christian writer from late antiquity in Gaul. Born in a Christian family in Toriel, he entered the monastery of Lerins in 425. In 439 he became a priest in Marseille, where he remained until the end of his life, and wrote many books while living an ascetic life. His main work is De gubernatione Dei (8 volumes). He witnessed the plundering by the Franks in his hometown, but he criticized the people of the Roman Empire, especially the officials of Toriel and the Christians of the empire, as corrupt, and claimed that the Germanic invasion and disasters were a manifestation of God's wrath against these believers. He also argued that the Germanic people were more ethical and capable of becoming good believers, and called on the believers of the empire to repent, abandon their dissolute lifestyle, and help the poor.
