Interbank exchange rate

Generally refers to the foreign exchange buying and selling rate between banks. The rate is established when authorized foreign exchange banks make offers and bids. The rate for customers is determined based on this rate. The rates of each country's currency are customarily quoted in US dollars. For example, the yen and other major currencies are displayed as 1 US dollar = 130.80 yen, while the British pound is displayed as 1 British pound = US$1.6543. Transactions can be made by telephone through an exchange broker, or directly by telephone or telex, and market participants are authorized foreign exchange banks, exchange brokers who act as intermediaries between banks, and central banks.
