Gold foil - Kinpaku (English spelling)

This is the oldest type of metal leaf. Taking advantage of gold's high malleability, it can be rolled out to a thickness of 0.1 micrometers. High-purity gold is difficult to foil, so commercially available gold is an alloy of gold, copper, and silver. When it is made into an alloy, the malleability improves, but there are differences in color. In Japan, more than 98% of the total production is made in Kanazawa City. Although the foil-making process has been partially mechanized, there are many traditional techniques, and in the final foil-beating process, gold about 2 micrometers thick, called joumi, is sandwiched between specially treated Japanese paper, bundled, and wrapped in leather, which is then beaten with a foil-beating machine to produce gold leaf. It is mainly used as a material for arts and crafts, gold leaf cutting, and gold thread, and for decoration such as the gold on books.

もっとも歴史の古い金属箔の一種。金の高い展延性を利用し、打ち延ばして厚さ0.1マイクロメートルのものまでできる。高純度の金は箔打ちが困難で、市販のものは金と銅と銀の合金である。合金にすると展延性は向上するが、色に差異が出る。日本では金沢市で国内全生産量の98％以上がつくられている。製箔工程は機械化が一部行われているものの、技法に伝統的な部分が非常に多く、最終の箔打ち工程では、特殊な処理を施した和紙に上澄みとよばれる厚さ2マイクロメートル程度の金を挟んで束にし、それを革で包んだものを箔打ち機で打って金箔にしている。主として美術工芸品、金切箔(きんきりはく)、金糸の材料になり、また書籍の天金(てんきん)など装飾に用いられる。
