al-Aḥsā'ī, Shaykh Aḥmad

al-Aḥsā'ī, Shaykh Aḥmad
Born: 1753. Ahsa
Died in 1826. Founder of the Shaikh sect, a branch of the Medina Islam Shiite sect. Influenced by the philosophy of Mulla Sadra, he gave a metaphysical meaning based on his own cosmology to the idea of the Imam (a religious leader who descends from the bloodline of an Islamic prophet), which is the fundamental principle for the existence of Shiite sect. He claims that the Imam is the active agent of creation and a manifestation of God's will. In order to make such a metaphysical interpretation of the Imam possible, he added new interpretations to Islamic traditions, which led to criticism from Shiite conservatives and suppression by the government of the time. His ideas later had a major influence on the religious movements Babi and Bahai that arose in Persia.
