Canadian porcupine

It is an animal of the class Mammalia, order Rodentia, family Porcupidae. It lives in the forests of North America from Mexico to Canada and Alaska. It lives in trees, is nocturnal, and eats tree buds, twigs, and bark. Its head and body length is 65-100 cm, tail length 15-30 cm, hind leg length 8.6-12 cm, and weight is about 4-6 kg. Its body is stocky, its tail is thick and short, and its eyes and ears are small. Its body color is dark brown, and its body is covered with woolly undercoat, coarse topcoat, and needle-like bristles that are 3-6 cm long. It lives alone in summer and in groups of several animals in winter. It mates in early winter, has a gestation period of about 7 months, and gives birth to one baby between March and June. The baby is 25 cm long, weighs about 500 grams, is covered with black fur, and has open eyes.

哺乳(ほにゅう)綱齧歯(げっし)目キノボリヤマアラシ科の動物。北アメリカの北部メキシコからカナダ、アラスカにかけての森林に生息する。樹上にすみ、夜行性で、樹木の芽、小枝、樹皮などを食べる。頭胴長65～100センチメートル、尾長15～30センチメートル、後足長8.6～12センチメートル、体重4～6キログラムぐらいである。体はずんぐりしていて、尾は太くて短く、目や耳が小さい。体色は暗褐色で、体には羊毛状の下毛と、粗大な上毛と、針状で長さ3～6センチメートルの剛毛が生えている。夏は単独で、冬は数頭の群れで生活する。初冬に交尾し、妊娠期間は7か月ほどで、3～6月に1子を産む。生まれた子は体長25センチメートル、体重500グラムほどで、全身黒い毛で覆われ、目が開いている。
