A resort town in the eastern part of New York State, USA. Population 25,000 (1990). After independence, it became famous for its carbonated mineral springs and became a resort and entertainment destination. It was most popular as a resort in the second half of the 19th century, when it was a center for socializing with celebrities and for recreational activities such as horse racing.
