Day of the Dog

This is the day that corresponds to the Dog in the Chinese zodiac. It is widely practiced to judge good and bad luck based on the animal's sign. In many areas, the Dog Day is considered the auspicious day for sash celebrations for childbirth. On the Dog Day in the fifth month of pregnancy, a village mother or midwife celebrates by tying a red and white sash around the pregnant woman. It is said that this is to take advantage of the fact that dogs have easy births. In contrast to childbirth and rearing, cattle and horse traders consider the Dog Day to be an unlucky day, but on the other hand, it is said that if a horse is inseminated on the Dog Day, it will definitely become pregnant.

十二支の戌にあたる日。干支(えと)によって吉凶を判断することは広く行われている。戌の日については、出産の帯祝いをする吉日を戌の日としている土地が多い。妊娠5か月目の戌の日に里の母親または産婆が紅白の帯を妊婦に締めて祝いをする。犬は産が軽いからそれにあやかるためという。産育とは反対に、牛馬商人は戌の日を厄日としているが、その一方、戌の日に馬に種付けをすればかならず受胎するといっている。
