The Orthodox Church of Ukraine. Formed an autonomous church under the Patriarchate of Moscow. Ukraine, the center of Christian culture in Russia, was devastated by the Mongol invasion, and the Metropolitan of Kiev moved to Moscow in the first half of the 14th century. From the second half of the 14th century, Ukraine gradually came under Polish control, and the Catholic Church worked to unify the region, resulting in the establishment of a United Church with the Brest Union Declaration (1595). This church lost its influence by the mid-19th century. The United Church in Galicia had almost disappeared by 1946. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
