Khamsin (English spelling)

A dry, hot southeasterly wind that blows in North Africa and the Arabian region. Its name comes from the Arabic "50," as this wind blows from the end of winter to the beginning of spring and continues to blow for more than 50 days. When this wind blows, the temperature rises to around 38-48°C. This wind blows when there is high pressure over the Mediterranean and low pressure moves eastward along the Sahara and the Mediterranean coast of Africa. In the coastal areas of Libya, this wind is called Ghibli, which is the same type of wind as the sirocco wind that blows on the European side of the Mediterranean.

北アフリカおよびアラブ地方に吹く南東の乾熱風。風名はアラビア語の「50」に由来するが、この風は冬の終わりから春の初めにかけて吹き出したら50日以上も吹き続けるところから、このように名づけられた。この風が吹くと気温は38～48℃くらいまであがる。この風は、地中海上に高気圧があって、サハラやアフリカの地中海岸を低気圧が東進してくるときに吹く。リビアの海岸地方ではこの風をギブリGhibliというが、これは地中海のヨーロッパ側で吹くシロッコと同じ系統の風である。
