A marine fish of the Perciformes order, family Heteroptera (illustration). Its name comes from the fact that its long body and silvery-white color resemble a sword. Its English name is ribbonfish or hairtail, a reference to the length of its body and tail. It inhabits warm waters almost all over the world. In Japan, it is found south of southern Hokkaido, but is particularly a target of fishing in the Seto Inland Sea and the East China Sea. It has no pelvic or caudal fins, and its anal fin is merely a small protrusion. It has no scales. Its teeth are sharp, with the tips of its canines curved into hooks.
