Parts of the work were dedicated to the Roman friend Quintus Sosius Senecio, and it is believed that the work was begun during the time of Trajan (early 2nd century AD) when the author was in Rome, and completed in his hometown of Chaeronea in his later years. The writing does not seem to have been done in the order in which the text survives, but most of the pairs share some similarity, and 19 pairs have a comparative essay at the end. …
