chum

Japanese: chum
chum

[Siberian hunter's tent chum]
The forest steppe and taiga regions that occupy vast areas of Siberia have been the world of hunter-gatherers since ancient times. For example, the Evenki people (Tungusic in the strict sense), who are the most widespread in this region, have been on the move all year round in search of prey. Their dwellings, chum, consist of four or five thick poles tied together at the top to form the main pillar, and 10 to 40 thin sticks leaned against this in a cone shape to form a framework, measuring 2 to 4 meters in height and 3 to 6 meters in diameter. This framework is made of birch bark in summer and chamois skin (the rind of antelope or deer) in winter.
