The word steppe is often used in its original form, and in that case it refers to a grassland that exists in the temperate zone where trees cannot grow due to the dryness of summer and the low temperatures of winter. In the narrow sense, it refers to this type of grassland in southern Russia, where herbs, mainly those of the grass family, grow sparsely (→ chernozem). In the broad sense, it also includes those in other regions. Source: Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia About Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia Information |
