Pilgrimage Mandala

Japanese: 参詣曼荼羅 - さんけいまんだら

These large hanging paintings depict the scenery of shrines and temples and the people who make pilgrimages there. They were used to promote the interpretation of the paintings from the mid-16th century to the end of the 17th century. Although the portrayal of people is typical, auspicious events, legends, and customs are painstakingly written in, and they have been attracting attention in recent years as pictorial resources. Approximately 100 examples have been confirmed to exist, mainly in the Kinki region, including the Nachi Pilgrimage Mandala and the Kokawadera Pilgrimage Mandala.

社寺の景観とそこに参詣する民衆を写した大形の掛け絵図。16世紀半ばから17世紀末ころまで，絵解き勧進に用いられた。人物描写は類型的だが，縁起や説話，風俗が丹念に書き込まれており，絵画資料として近年注目を集めている。《那智参詣曼荼羅》，《粉河寺参詣曼荼羅》など近畿地方を中心に約100点の存在が確認される。
