When a pair of electrodes is placed in a solution of an electrolyte (acid, alkali, salt, etc.) and 1 coulomb of electricity is passed between the electrodes from a DC power source such as a battery to perform electrolysis, the number of grams of atoms or atomic groups that precipitate on each electrode (called the anode and cathode) is called the electrochemical equivalent of each substance. This is equal to the chemical equivalent of a metal or nonmetallic atom or atomic group divided by the Faraday constant. For example, the electrochemical equivalent of silver is 0.001118 grams.
