The origin of the words left wing and right wing comes from the fact that in the National Assembly during the French Revolution, radical revolutionaries sat to the left of the speaker's chair and moderates sat to the right. Although the content of each differs depending on the era and country, the commonalities can be summarized as follows. The left wing is the child of reason and enlightenment, and seeks to realize democracy, equality, and human rights in this world. They think on the premise that political and economic systems can be remade by humans. The left wing has often dreamed of creating an ideal world through revolution. The right wing values tradition, human emotions, and sentiment. The right wing believes that the systems of the world that have been established for a long time cannot be changed so easily, and should not be changed, even if there are some disadvantages. They also place more importance on the value of the community than the individual. In the 20th century, when there was a severe ideological conflict over the evaluation of capitalism, the conflict between the left and the right was over whether capitalism should be overthrown. After the collapse of the Cold War structure, the conflict between the left and the right was whether global capitalism should be left alone or whether it should be revised from the perspective of equality. However, the left-right conflict in Japan has taken the form of the right attacking those who belonged to the left during the Cold War and their successors over issues such as the constitution, historical awareness, and education.

フランス革命の時の国民議会で、急進革命派が議長席から見て左に、穏健派が右に座っていたことが、左翼、右翼という言葉の語源である。時代や国によってそれぞれの中身は異なるが、共通項を挙げれば次のようにまとめることができる。左翼は、理性や啓蒙の子であり、民主主義、平等、人権をこの世で実現しようとする。政治や経済の仕組みは人間の手で作りかえることができるという前提でものを考える。しばしば左翼は革命によって理想の世の中を作り出すことを夢見てきた。右翼は、伝統や人間の感情、情緒を重んじる。長い間定着してきた世の中の仕組みは、多少の弊害があっても、そう簡単に変えられないし、変えるべきでもないと右翼は考える。また、個人よりも共同体の価値を重視する。資本主義の評価をめぐるイデオロギー対立が厳しかった20世紀には、左右の対立は資本主義を倒すべきか否かをめぐるものであった。冷戦構造が崩壊した後は、グローバル資本主義を放置すべきか、これを平等の観点から修正すべきか、というのが左右の対立点である。もっとも、日本での左右対立は、憲法、歴史認識、教育などに関して冷戦時代に左に属したものおよびその継承者を右が攻撃するという形を取っている。
