Located at the northeastern tip of the Tsugaru Peninsula, facing the Shimokita Peninsula across the Hiradate Strait. Mountains such as Maruyakata-dake (718m), the highest peak on the Tsugaru Peninsula, and Hakamakoshi-dake, which form a branch of the Tsugaru Mountains, approach the coast, and 95% of the village area is covered by forest. The settlement is distributed along the old Matsumae Kaido (now National Route 280), which runs along the coast, and consists of towns and villages, including Hiradate in the center. Hiradate controls the entrance to Mutsu Bay, and at the end of the early modern period, the Hirosaki Domain's battery was established in Hiradate to guard against foreign ships.
