An island in the Sporades archipelago in the eastern Aegean Sea. It is part of Greece. It is just 2 km from the Turkish coast. It is mountainous, with the highest point at 1,450 m above sea level. It produces grapes, olives, and tobacco, and is famous for its sweet wine. It was colonized by Ionians in the 11th century BC. It became part of Turkey in 1453. It gained autonomy in 1832, and was annexed by Greece in 1923. It is the birthplace of Pythagoras. It forms a prefecture with the surrounding islands, and its capital city is Samos. The ruins of Pythagorion and the Temple of Hera were registered as a World Heritage Site in 1992. Total area is 778 km2 .
