This domain was located in Hamada, Naka County, Iwami Province (Hamada City, Shimane Prefecture). It was a medium-sized domain with frequent changes of lords, beginning with an outside daimyo, then a fudai clan, and finally a related clan at the end of the Edo period. Since the Mori clan was reduced to only two provinces, Bungo and Choshu, in 1600 (Keicho 5), this area was under direct control of the Tokugawa, but in 1619 (Genwa 5), the outside daimyo Furuta Shigeharu (55,000 koku), lord of Ise Matsusaka Domain, was transferred to Iwami 50,000 koku and Tamba 5,000 koku, and entered Hamada, where he built Hamada Castle and constructed a castle town. His nephew Shigetsune succeeded him, but the line died out without an heir. In 1649 (Keian 2), Matsudaira (Matsui) Yasuteru, a fudai daimyo and lord of the Harima Shisō domain (with a fief of over 54,000 koku), was transferred to Hamada, and in 1759 (Horeki 9), Honda Tadahisa, lord of the Shimousa Koga domain (with a fief of 50,000 koku), was also transferred to Hamada. In 1769 (Meiwa 6), the previous lord Matsudaira (Matsui) Yasuyoshi became lord of Hamada domain again, and in 1785 (Tenmei 5), his fief was increased by over 10,000 koku to 61,000 koku. In 1836 (Tenpo 7), Matsudaira Nariatsu (Takeatsu), lord of the Kozuke Tatebayashi domain, was assigned to the Hamada domain. When the Choshu army attacked in 1866 (Keio 2), the lord of the domain, Matsudaira Takeakira, abandoned the castle and fled to Tazuta in Mimasaka Province, which was an exclave of the Hamada domain. Hamada was occupied by the Choshu army and abolished as a domain. In 1869 (Meiji 2), the former domain territory, together with the neighboring shogunate territory and Oki, became Omori Prefecture (later Hamada Prefecture). The domain was plagued by many incidents, including the "Harusadameyosha Petition Disturbance" in 1716 (Kyoho 1), a peasant uprising; the "Kagamiyama Incident" in 1724, an internal conflict among ladies-in-waiting (deliberately adapted into the kabuki play "Kagamiyama Kokyo no Nishikie"); the "Hamada Religious Debate" between Jodo Shinshu and other sects from 1762 (Horeki 12) to 1767 (Meiwa 4); and the "Aizu Hachiemon Incident" in 1836 (Tenpo 7), which involved smuggling. However, the domain also focused on promoting industry, including the development of Iwami paper, as well as iron, wax, roofing tiles, and seafood, and the port of Sotoura (Hamada Port) became a bustling port on the Nishimawari shipping route.
