A town in Samani County in south-central Hokkaido. It is the terminus of the Hidaka Main Line. To the east is the southern tip of the Hidaka Mountains, and to the south faces the Pacific Ocean. It has been a fishing village since ancient times, producing large amounts of kelp. Other fish produced here include salmon, trout, and flounder, and the main agricultural industries are rice paddy, dairy farming, and light horse breeding. There is an alpine plant community on Mt. Apoi (a special natural monument).
