1805‐52 American neoclassical sculptor. Born in Boston. Immediately after graduating from Harvard University in 1825, he went to Rome, where he mastered the techniques of neoclassical sculpture at an early age for an American. He produced many monumental portrait sculptures, but was torn between his romantic sentiments, which drew inspiration from Greek mythology, the Bible, Byron, and other sources, and his desire to look to ancient Greek and Roman sculpture as a model. He also left behind a collection of essays (1852) that explored the relationship between architecture and decoration. He remained in Italy until the year before his death.
