〘noun〙 (translation of dilemma) In formal logic, a hypothetical syllogism whose major premise consists of two hypothetical judgments and whose minor premise and conclusion are disjunctive judgments. A valid conclusion can be reached only if the minor premise either affirms the antecedent of the major premise or denies the consequent. In this type of logic, if the minor premise affirms the antecedent of the major premise, a conclusion is reached that affirms the consequent of the hypothetical judgment, which is called a constructive double-edged argument. If the minor premise denies the consequent of the hypothetical judgment, a conclusion is reached that denies the antecedent, which is called a destructive double-edged argument. Dilemma.
